Double Drop Deck Trailer
Double drop deck trailers were created for freight that has a height of 10 feet or more. Its main deck, called a “well,” dips below its axles. Wells range from 25 to 29 feet long, making them ideal for tall, short freight. Double drop deck trailers also have two decks, one in front and one in back. They have at least two axles, and many have a “flip axle” in the rear. This optional extra axle can either flip up and lie on the rear deck or flip down and create an extra axle to bear greater weight.
Here are some examples of the kinds of cargo that typically use double drop decks:
- Cars and trucks
- Construction equipment
- Forklifts
- Military vehicles such as tanks
Double Drop Deck Trailer Facts
Double drop decks come equipped with standard electrical and air connections at the front. These connections power the trailer’s brake and radar lights and pump the necessary air pressure to its brakes.
Many modern double drop trailers are composed entirely of aluminum. This makes the trailers lighter, but it also limits their hauling capacity. Double drops often come with storage bins for dunnage, which can help secure or ventilate the cargo they haul.
Our double drop decks can haul freight all the way up to the legal maximum weight and dimensions. These trailers are typically used when moving overheight freight and can range from 48’ to 53’ in length. This gives you multiple options to fit your specific cargo needs.
Double drop decks are similar to removable gooseneck trailers (RGNs), except double drop decks are typically lighter duty. They are great for long-distance transport, but they aren’t ideal for extremely heavy hauls. They have a maximum carrying capacity of around 45,000 pounds, while RGNs can haul loads as heavy as 150,000 pounds.
Some double drop decks can extend their length. These extendable trailers do not have additional axles like extendable RGNs, however.
